Nava Hefetz

Rabbi Nava Hefetz is the Director of Education for Rabbis for Human Rights, Israel. In her role, she works with Israeli communities to expose them to the reality of the Occupation, examining its repercussions from a Jewish-universal standpoint. Nava also coordinates an Israeli-Palestinian women's group that meets in Jerusalem.

Shaul Vardi (translation)

Shaul Vardi is a freelance translator and editor living in Jerusalem and active in the Reform community Kol HaNeshama (KKH). Among other liturgical projects, Shaul devised the transliteration methods used in KKH’s bilingual Siddur and in the bilingual accompaniment to the new Israeli Reform Siddur Tefilat Ha-Adam. He also composed the first Hebrew-language “mi she-berakh” for LGBTQI+ Pride Shabbat.

  Hi! I am interested in vocalizing this. Would you be willing to transcribe as addressing a feminine Divinity and post with the Hebrew vowels included?

    Great! Please add niqqud (vocalization). I’m not completely certain what you mean about our being willing to transcribe the prayer as it is already transcribed. (It will be fine if you gender the existing text through the niqqud as feminine.)

  Hi! I meant could you provide it in the Hebrew with vowels and addressing feminine Divinity? I am not fluent enough in Hebrew to do it correctly.

  Adding the vowels to the existing text is not too difficult and I would be happy to do that over a couple of weeks.
  Creating a feminine version of the prayer is much more tricky. As you know it would require a lot of changes, and some challenges in terms of maintaining authentic Hebrew language (authentic can certainly mean innovative, but it can’t just mean a copy of English norms). In the next-to-last verse, for example, a feminine version of היה שומרם ומצילם needs some real thought.

      Shouldn’t Bareich have a kamatz (tashlum dageish)?
      For sure, last paragraph should be v’simchat, not u-
      There is no reason for it not to be vuv.
